Contingency IncreaseOn the afternoon of Day 3, the Law Committee took up the issue of changing Article 12.2.3, which provides for a contingency dues increase to maintain revenue levels in the event that membership levels drop. Some delegates rose to oppose the issue, suggesting that the provision was too open-ended and that the increase would create hardships. Supporters stated that the contingency would only be used in extreme circumstances. It was pointed out that if the provision is invoked, it can later be rescinded if member levels later increase. A proposed amendment by Preston Miracle, Local 1240 (Wabash, Ind.), was ruled out of order, because someone had already called the previous question. |
