Highlights of Convention Day 2

Guest speakers roused delegates on the morning of Day 2. Robert Blakely, director of Canadian Affairs for the Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO, talked about the bright work out look for construction, saying the Boilermakers must step up efforts to recruit and train members.

AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka gave a passionate and inspiring speech blaming corporate greed for stagnant wages and an anti-union climate.

Political commentator Jim Hightower gave a humorous look at the current political situation in the United States.

After the guest speakers roused the crowd, delegates elected International officers.

Following lunch, the Committee on the Officers Report and the Credentials Committee gave their final reports. The Law Committee then resumed its report. Among the Law Committee’s recommendations was an amendment to Article 5.2 allowing reductions to the IEC through attrition. The amendment, approved by the delegates, is expected to save the Brotherhood money and bring the number of International officers more in line with current membership numbers.

Throughout the day, the department of political affairs raised money for LEF and CAF.

After the convention recessed, delegates went to a reception, featuring the Zippers.
