Richard Trumka

Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO

Richard Trumka

Richard L. Trumka is currently serving his third term as secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO. He was first elected in 1995, the youngest secretary-treasurer in AFL-CIO history, as part of an insurgent campaign to reinvigorate the American labor movement.

Trumka chairs key AFL-CIO committees on strategic planning, finance, and retirement security, and is credited with creating the highly successful Capital Stewardship Program, which safeguards union pension and benefit plans worth $400 billion.

A third-generation coal miner from Pennsylvania, Trumka served three terms as president of the United Mine Workers of America prior to his election as AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer.
