Gary Doer

Gary Doer is the Canadian Ambassador to the United States. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador, Doer was the Premier of Manitoba, serving from 1999 to 2009.

During his time as Premier, Doer led a New Democratic Party provincial government that was noted for an unbroken string of balanced budgets.

Doer has a strong labor background. He served as president of the Manitoba Government Employees’ Association from 1979 until 1986. He also held positions with the Manitoba Federation of Labour and the National Union of Provincial Government Employees.

In polls taken from 2003 to 2006, Doer was ranked as Canada’s most popular premier, and a 2008 poll gave him an approval rating of 81 percent.
